He named the species \u2018<em>moquini\u2019&nbsp;<\/em>after Horace Benedict\nAlfred Moquin Tandon. The genus name,&nbsp;<em>Haematopus<\/em>, means legs and\nfeet red like blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Description<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Black Oystercatcher is a black bird with pink legs and feet, a bright orange-red bill and red eyes surrounded by an orange eye ring. This black bird is found along the coast of southern Africa. Both male and female have the same plumage coloration. The female is bigger than the male. Males have shorter blunt bills than the female. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/biobluenviro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sdf.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-256\"\/><figcaption><br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/biobluenviro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/13-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-257\"\/><figcaption>Image Courtesy of Hennie Cilliers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chicks are well camouflaged with grey plumage and black stripes behind the eyes and along the crown. Juveniles have duller plumage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/biobluenviro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/zcBlackOystercatcher7D.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-258\"\/><figcaption> (Image Courtesy of Robert Royse) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conservation status and what the future holds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The global population of the African Black\nOystercatcher has increased by about 33% since 1980 (5&nbsp;000) to early 2000\n(6&nbsp;670). Due to the small population size of less than 10&nbsp;000 individuals,\nthe IUCN and South Africa regard the African Black Oystercatcher as \u2018Near\nThreatened\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The increased or stable population is due to improved management plans that were put in place to protect these birds as well the additional food source in the form of the alien Mediterranean mussel (<em>Mytilus galloprovincialis<\/em>) that lead to an increase in breeding success. Reduced human disturbance and the near eradication of predator populations on islands played a huge role in increasing the birds\u2019 population on islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/biobluenviro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/fdgd.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-259\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Oystercatcher Conservation Programme (OCP)\nwas established in 1998 to increase the conservation of this species, raise\npublic awareness and get local communities involved in the conservation of\nthese birds. In 2000, a national ban of recreational vehicles along the beaches\nof South Africa was put in place. This ban reduced the level of disturbance\nalong South Africa\u2019s coasts, thus increasing the bird\u2019s breeding success and\npopulation along the coastal areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 80% of the mainland population of African\nBlack Oystercatchers in South Africa are found outside protected areas. Mainland\npopulations outside South Africa\u2019s protected areas are lower than populations\ninside protected areas. Human-related activities in non-protected areas lower\nbreeding success of the birds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Threats to African Black Oystercatcher populations include human disturbances (recreational cars on beaches and introducing predators) at the breeding sites, degradation and destruction of roost and breeding areas through infrastructure developments, coastal diamond mining, pollution, sedimentation of lagoons, paralytic shellfish poisoning and spring high tides (flooding of nests causing egg loss).
