The most common definition of\nrehabilitation is \u201cthe process of returning the land in a given area to some\ndegree of its former state, after some process (mining, natural disasters,\netc.) has resulted in its damage.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it is important when\nconducting the process to remember that between everything living and\nnon-living thing there are larger patterns and delicate interdependencies that\nneed to be taken into consideration as Gregory Bateson discovered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, rather than only taking\ninto account rehabilitation, we implement restoration. Restoration is the\nprocess of ecological restoration of a site to a natural landscape and habitat.\nAlthough on this project the end goal is farming, we are looking to enhance the\nsupply of ecosystem services while also trying to restore biodiversity in the\narea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Study\nSite:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sand mine has been\noperational since the 1980\u2019s and a fairly large area has been disturbed\nthroughout the operational lifetime of the mine. However, the company is also involved\nin the farming industry, and through the years they have ensured some degree of\nrehabilitation on certain areas of the farm where no mining is taking place. Just\nto mention, without the client\u2019s efforts to ensure compliance and working with\nus these results would not have been possible thus far. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project started in November\n2018 and we decided to implement a phased rehabilitation project to ensure that\nwe restore the areas and natural habitats to its desired state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As illustrated in Figure 1\nbelow, the area had not yet received good summer rainfall at that point in\ntime. Grass species were present, however large patches of open ground were\nevident. These open areas have been hardened as a result of the lack of\nvegetation cover. After the initial site visit, a rehabilitation plan was set\nup which the clients needed to follow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The phased rehabilitation process\nwas initiated by ripping the soil and spreading manure\/compost over these bare\nsoil areas to ensure that there are sufficient nutrients in the ground to supply\nthe new seedlings with nutrients once they started to grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monitoring was conducted during\nFebruary 2019 and Figure 3 below illustrates that with the assistance of some\ngood summer rains, parts of the area have re-established, and thick grass stands\ncould be seen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Figure 4 we can see that\nsome of the areas are still in process, however new vegetation growth is\nestablishing and with time and care this area will also be restored to its\nnatural state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A follow up article will follow during the coming months as rehabilitation continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
